I downloaded this book as I read and enjoyed Preservation, and as it was a freebie what was there to lose. I know what I lost and it was patience. I know that angst filled romances are popular and that complications always occur in contemporary romance, but this story has enough for several novels. There were just so many complications that the drama became too much for me. There was just complication after complication after complication, leading to more angst on top of more angst. The actual time Jackson and Emma were actually together and happy was such a small part of the book that I never felt like I got respite from the angst. I'm not joking about that either, they were only together and happy for about 15% of the book, in the middle.I also have to say I had issues with both Emma and Jackson. Let's start with Jackson. Jackson is a bad boy sleep with anything who makes Travis Maddox (Beautiful Disaster) look like a saint. He is such a jerk at numerous points throughout the book that I found it impossible to like him a lot of the time. But then the he could be super sweet. But my biggest issue, for those of you who don't like it when the Hero can't keep it in his pants you will hate Jackson. Jackson declares his undying love for Emma, saying he has been in love with her for 3 years. Emma doesn't know what to make of this and asks for time. Two weeks later he is banging another girl because (his reason when she finds out)' I didn't think you wanted me'. Two weeks. Come on. Some undying love.
And this is where I have issues with Emma. Emma accepts this way too easily. She is at times a doormat to him, and yet at other times is super strong, and tells it like it is. I have to say because of this I found it hard to get a real read on her character as she flipped from one to the other too much. At times I really liked her and other times I wanted to knock some sense into her.
Not all of it annoyed me. There were no annoying editing issues, the book was written well, and it has an ending. I really liked the supporting characters. I just personally felt that with a little less drama and angst, and with some more happy parts, this could have made a good read. The final issue I have though is that although you get your happy ever after, due to Jackson's sleeping with anything ways and all the past angst, it felt more like a `happy for now', and what we all want from a romance is a happy ever after.
Will I read it again? No
Would I recommend it? No. But if you like REALLY angst filled complication after complication contemporary romance reads and don't have a problem with hero's who can't keep it in their pants you will love it.

This is the first book by Rachael Wade I have read, but it certainly won't be the last. *Therefore, I am proof that you do not have to read Preservation to enjoy this book; but, I will probably read it now anyway. Mrs. Wade's writing style is so smooth and effortless. From the beginning I was no longer reading words, but living in the book, and feeling every emotion the characters did. I love when that happens -)
Emma is a college sophomore dealing with the tragic death of her sister, and a really bad breakup. Jackson is the town bad boy, womanizer--who helped Emma when she needed him after her sister died. There is much more to Jackson than just his superficial persona, and we find out exactly why he behaves like he does. I fell in love with him as Emma did, and I was so proud of her for being so very strong at certain points throughout the story. She was never Jackson's doormat, and he wouldn't have wanted her if she was. The chemistry between them was incredible, and the sex scenes were HOT!!! Again, the sex scenes were HOT, and graphic--so if that's not your thing than definitely pass on this one.
My favorite quote from the book was from a part when they were in the ocean staring at each other, blissfully happy to be together, and Jackson says to Emma "you own me." That's it, just three little words, but in context they were a monumental confession of just how much he loved her. But do they get their HEA? I don't like to spoil things, but I will say that they are able to overcome many, many, obstacles throughout the course of this book.
The secondary characters were good, and they wove nicely throughout the story. I'm sure we will be seeing more of them in future books. If I had to change anything about this book (a question I always ask myself) it would be to extend the ending a bit. I really wanted to see them at their friends wedding. However, that may be in a future book?? That being said, it did not take away from the book at all. I really did enjoy it tremendously!

Books Unhinged Review [...]
Warning--if you do not enjoy the alpha male playboy type as your hero than pass on this book. I only say this because I see some negative reviews based on the hero's character--he is meant to be that way; readers like me enjoy these types of characters. I understand not everyone does that's why I wanted to let you know what you're getting into.
Update 3/22/2013 ~ I was told by the author that the wedding scene I spoke of above is in her book Reservation (Preservation #2).
