This author is highly talented and outrageously creative. She created a world without color and made it so vivid in all different shades of charcoal to light gray. It was amazing to imagine this world and even feel the depression of such a place. The story was not disorganized but at times difficult to follow. The characters were multi-faceted and emotional like any real human being is from one moment to another. At one moment I loved a character and the next I wanted to yell at them. My only reason for giving 3 stars is because I was disappointed by how the story played out. As the story progressed I felt like one dissonant chord after the other kept blaring. This is a dark story, just as this world is full of shadows. Beautifully written and wonderfully illuminated in my mind.

Lords of Rainbow or The Book of Fulfillment Vera Nazarian 9781592248230 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. I was initially skeptical about how much of a plot you could make out of the absence of color, but actually, it worked amazingly well. The writing is elegant and pleasant to read, and the characters are interesting and have a lot of depth. And I'd like to visit the city, too. I'll be looking for more from this author.
A little hard getting into, but once into it, the book is very good read. The characters are very real, flawed but intriguing human beings. The protagonists each hate themselves on some level and the book is about how each deals with themselves and with each other and on the nature of love and loyalty. I can't say I understood it all, and will probably re-read it at some point.
Sometimes it is difficult to find the right words of praise for a book that I truly enjoyed. Ms. Nazarain has imagined a time without color. Scary. She has developed some wonderful characters with strong resolve but yet hiding from things that trip them up.

I want you to read this but start by emptying your minds of what you expect or what you have read in the past. This book is strongly written and takes you on a trip of intrigue and suspense.

I am out of words. Read this book and enjoy!
"Lords of Rainbow" firmly afixed Vera Nazarian as one of my favorite writers for her incredible ability to get inside the characters' heads and make us feel *exactly* how it is. The novel is a traditional fantasy (very readable quest story) yet so lyrical and beautifully written, it could well be the best (certainly the most lovely) book I've ever read.

Highlights of the book for me included the most accurate description of how it feels to be depressed; the sex scenes, which for all their lack of sex or anything explicit, simmered with warmth and tension and seemed all too real; the honest portrayal of the pangs of unrequited love; the weaving of several parallel minor character arcs. Weaker spots were the prologue, and a few areas with abstracted descriptions of magic/deities. The ending is also a little limp compared to the strong beginning. I would love to see Nazarian take things farther, more and bigger with drama and emotions - her strength is definitely in speaking from people's heads, while exercising restraint in any abstract musings, and taking care to avoid occasional repetition of words (like "dandelion hair").

The main character is a woman warrior, supremely capable, and yet realistic. Ranhe wears men's clothings and fights well with a sword, but isn't a ravishing beauty - instead, she's rather homely, and her insecurities are achingly believable. She thinks and talks like a real person, with suprising humor, warmth, and self-awareness. She crosses paths with a beautiful, mysterious nobleman and, intrigued, accepts his offer of a job to be his bodyguard. Rahne thus becomes a heroine in an unlikely story of unrequited love, as the glimmering decadent city of Tronaelend-Lis is threatened by invaders with dark magic, and the secret of the world without color is revealed.

The books deserves the highest praise for its exceptional writing, deft world-building and story-telling, and incredible ability to relate the poignancy of relationships and emotions.

Vera Nazarian is an exciting writer to watch. I also highly recommend her Dreams Of The Compass Rose, a more polished and fancyful (but less emotionally charged) series of vignettes reminiscent of Arabian Nights, and Salt of the Air, a collection of short stories.
Simply amazing. I haven't read a book this good in a long time.

Fantasy/Romance

I was hesitant to read this book at first. The first 10% consisted of small stories about different people from the world. Many different characters were introduced with complicated names. However, all of these people are incorporated in the second half in clever ways, and the stories, written very well, added more to the colorless world.
The fact that Nazarain created a wonderful world without the use of color is a testament to how well she can write. The characters are real and don't have the typical `fairy tale' reactions or say the perfect thing all the time. All the characters, even the minor ones have a unique personality the makes the reader want to know what happens to them.
Ranche is one of the most vividly portrayed heroine I have ever read. She suffers from extreme insecurities and self-hate because she isn't aesthetically beautiful (finally a main character that isn't stunningly `beautiful'), but has fierce loyalty and devotion. Another great thing about her is that she doesn't act like a crazy teenager, but a quiet but witty mature woman. She's a great character.

As for the romance; I thought it was wonderful. I'm not going to give too much away, but the romance concludes not in a clique fairy tale sort of way, but a way that is perfect for both of the partners.

The ending doesn't leave the reader hanging, because the story (and all the mini stories) are wrapped up in the end. There is going to be a sequel, but the book could easily stand alone.
Overall, Lord of Rainbow will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
